Pope John Paul II Declared "Venerable"

On Saturday in Rome, Pope Benedict XVI approved a decree declaring that Pope John Paul II lived a life of heroic virtue and according him the title 'Venerable'.  The Holy Father must yet approve of a miracle attributed to the late pope's intercession before he can be beatified, the next step on the path to sainthood.

The Holy Father also approved a decree on the heroic virtues of Pope Pius XII, the wartime pope who has been the target of a campaign of defamation led by liberal Jews and revisionist historians.

One Response to Pope John Paul II Declared "Venerable"

  1. Joe Oliveri says:

Clerical abuse victims, RC traditionalists, and many other Catholics (and non-Catholics as well) will never accept John Paul II as a saint. Few doubt the man's personal sanctity or orthodoxy; but in terms of his pontificate, and his legacy… there are too many problems that cannot simply be swept under the rug.

This santo subito business has got to stop. The personality cult built up around the late pontiff — with his tacit approval — is not the way popes should be seen. Popes are not rock star celebutants.

I don't mean to sound bitter, but the abuse scandal in particular has been a disastrous episode in Church history. These stories are profoundly distressing and stand in stark contrast with the supposed "new Springtime of evangelization." We cannot ignore the fact that John Paul II largely chose to look the other way when confronted with the problem.
