A Pontifical Institute for the Study of Anglicanism

Fr. John D. Alexander, SSC, Rector of S. Stephen's Episcopal Church, Providence, Rhode Island, offers a proposal.

In view of these questions, I offer the following modest proposal. If Rome is serious about “safeguarding and nourishing” the Anglican tradition within the Catholic Church, then let a Pontifical Faculty or Institute for the Study of Anglicanism be established for purposes of scholarly research. Such a Faculty could be located either in Rome or maybe in Oxford or Cambridge, and should bring together Anglican and Roman Catholic scholars in a spirit of ecumenical cooperation. It should have a journal and be able to publish books. In particular, it should also have the power to grant degrees (or otherwise appropriate certification) to those who will be responsible for the Anglican component of the education of seminarians in the Ordinariates.

  1. Yes! Start it in Oxford just in time for Newman's beatification.
